Clemmons was fatally shot at about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday by Seattle police officer Benjamin Kelly in the 4400 block of South Kenyon Street, ending a manhunt that began Sunday morning after four Lakewood police officers were killed in Pierce County.

The man at the wheel of the Toyota Corolla kept driving from the scene of the accident at Rainier Avenue South and South Andover Street. Police stopped him at 20th Avenue South and South Jackson Street.

A driver suspected of hit-and-run was taken into custody Wednesday night more than a mile from the scene of an accident where a female pedestrian was injured at Rainier Avenue South and South Andover Street.

Police said the 78-year-old woman was walking at the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Andover Street when she was struck by a truck around 6:30 p.m. The unidentified woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Little public information was immediately known about Kelly. In July, he responded to what police described as two gang-related shootings at a house in the 7900 block of 45th Avenue South.

According to scanner reports, the suspect in the Lakewood police shootings, Maurice Clemmons, was captured earlier this morning in the 4400 block of South Kenyon Street, and KIRO 7, KIRO 97.3, CBS Radio News, and several other local media outlets have just now reported that he is dead.

Maurice Clemmons was carrying a handgun he took from one of the dead officers when a Seattle policeman recognized him near a stolen car near the 4400 block of S. Kenyon Street about 2:45 a.m., Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said.
