They conducted a traffic stop, and at 10:06 p.m. were discussing it near 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way when investigators say Christopher J. Monfort boxed in their patrol car with his 1980 Datsun 210.

Trial delayed for ex-deputy charged in cell beating
Brenton and Officer Britt Sweeney were parked near 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way when a car pulled up alongside their cruiser and an occupant opened fire. Brenton was hit multiple times; Sweeney, wounded in the back, returned fire as the car left the scene.

Brenton and Sweeney, 33, were parked on 29th Avenue north of East Yesler Way in the Leschi neighborhood just after 10 p.m. Halloween night when someone pulled up next to their patrol car and opened fire. Brenton was killed instantly and Sweeney suffered minor wounds.
