Neighbor

"Hi neighbors,
If you would like to be part of deluging Mayor McGinn and the SPD with concerns about the violence in Rainier Beach, you can email
Mayor McGinn at:

mike.mcginn@seattle.gov
or fill out the Seattle Police Department contact form at this link:

http://seattle-p1csrprodcwi.motorolasolutions.com/ServiceRequest.mvc/SRIntakeStep2?id=PDWEBTMP&templateid=&guid=3ed1d0706c4f41e5951e21e7cc59fd59&srID=

or leave voicemails for John Diaz, the Police Chief, at:
206-684-5577

Do it now, do it respectfully and do it persistently until we see some positive change in Rainier Beach.

  • Perhaps Mayor McGinn could put some of his infamous road diet projects on hold and take care of our safety. I know Othello is slated for something like a $1 million "diet". I have not been that way in awhile, not sure if it has started yet.

  • Ray Akers Columbia City

City leaders have misplaced priorities. Job #1 is public safety; police & fire. Instead, city leaders are spending money on many pet projects including street cars and bike lanes, while placing a moratorium on hiring new police officers. Perhaps SE residents should start a petition or plan a protest at City Hall?

Violence Near Southshore school

Can we come up with some solutions regarding the youth and gang violence near our kids' schools? More police down here? More community involvment? More investment? It's unsettling to hear of several shootings and "gang" fights in an area where my child goes to school and library. Just putting it out there...

I started the Columbia City nightly walks in 1994. Dozens of neighbors walked the streets six nights a week to take back the streets from drug dealers and prostitution. It took several years to push back the entrenched culture of crime. That was then, this is now. The crime problems are different, more violent and random today.

Do you want real solutions? Start with City Hall. For over 50 years, the city has 'steered' most social services here. Data shows poverty & crime are inseparable. The Seattle Housing Authority is the largest property owner in SE Seattle, skewing our rents lower, holding back property values. 40% of the city's subsidized housing is crammed into SE Seattle. SE is the densest residential neighborhood in the city. Poverty never improves here. That's why Target and Trader Joe's and you-name- it won't locate new stores here.

Crime isn't going to go away until every neighborhood in the city accepts their fair share of Seattle''s social burden. There are too few SE residents speaking up, so city leaders continue to target our community for more density and more low-income housing. Other neighborhoods speak up and demand better treatment. That's why Roosevelt light rail station has a 6-story height limit but height limits in SE Seattle may reach 18 stories. Where's the fairness? It's the same light rail, after all?

Thank you Ray. You are dead on with your analysis. IMO all neighborhoods should come together as one to go up against htis problem that is affecting all of us. I know for myself I am more than willing to work with anyone. Anytime andy place to put into place any type of program that will help to make "our" neighborhoods safer. City hall is exactly where it should start and we should keep improving what we do on the streets. City council has monthly Public safety meetings with the Police, the Mayor and others. This unfortunately is during the day. I am not adverse to grouping with many people from neighborhoods to go to council meetings to inform and educate out "city officials" as to what is going on under their noses. Thanks again Ray for being on top of this. you are a valued neighbor and citizen in this city.

Loud planes over Beacon Hill?

I just saw this tweet from King5:

"Some are asking about loud plane(s) over Seattle @texel says he saw two F-18s over Beacon Hill. (no confirmation or word why)"

Anyone hearing this or know anything?

  • Phil phil

    Practicing for Tehran.

  • I twas just a couple of F-18s shooing missed approaches. I saw one of them eventually land. Not sure if it was Whidbey Growlers of some transient fighter types visiting. I work at Boeing Field. Nothing unusual. Traffic was not interrupted. It is slow that time of night anyway until the freighters start departing en masse. About Boeing Field being a military airport? Not so much. No base there. It does play home to transient military aircraft at times. Sometimes they are parked at an FBO and sometimes at Boeing.
