This Week In Restaurant News: Cocktail Lounges, Bento Boxes, and Sky-High Ice Cream

The former Revolution Wine shop on Pike and Belmont has been reimagined with a bigger emphasis on the lounge with a new cocktail program and small tapas-style plates. The Belmont has a British Colonial-type decor with leather couches, rattan chairs, and palms. Quite a cozy spot for a quaff, indeed.

Sota is 11 inches tall, blue and white, with hugely dilated pupils and thin irises that glow the fluorescent yellow of institutional lighting. It sits on the bar in Capitol Hill's new Junkichi Robata Izakaya beside a display of pineapples and limes and an enormous white Chinese yam.

Approach from the east, and the red tugboat-shaped building that established Seattle's relationship with pho looks as if it's pulling the blocky, mostly black edifice that looms behind it across the concrete sea of a neighborhood in flux. These days, though, it's the other way around.

It's the newest taqueria on the block, and unlike Monica Dimas's other joints-Sunset Fried Chicken, Westman's, Tortas Condesa, the original Neon Taco-it's no mere walkup window. Spacious digs on First Hill beget a bigger menu graced by nine tacos, like one with slabs of crispy pork belly and fresh salsa that tests the max capacity of a corn tortilla, plus sandwiches, mole pork ribs, and sides aplenty.

Oh, Seattle summer. You fickle, fickle beast. Like Katy Perry once whined, "You're hot then you're cold..." She wasn't referring to your temperamental temperatures, yet, it relates all too well. No matter! We're out here waiting in lines that snake through scoop shops like our ice cream-loving lives depend on it.

Think Bierstube: brick walls, bar stools, brats (terrific), beers (even better), and braised sauerkraut to make a fan of any hater ( why thank you, duck fat!). You'll find German brews-dunkelweisse, pilsners, schwarzbier-alongside local beers will a slight German bent. Even the pretzels are brezels -dense, pillowy, and freakishly exquisite with hot, sweet housemade mustard.

Now for an Update on Jack's BBQ Expansions
Back in April, Jack Timmons, of his eponymous Central Texas-style barbecue joint, announced that he was bringing brisket and breakfast tacos to South Lake Union. On top of that he's been slinging smoked meats and more at Safeco Field this baseball season. We also knew he had plans to expand into Columbia Tower downtown.
