We spied Buddy Dean on the sidewalk near Rocket Taco along 19th Ave E. Buddy Dean is a seven or eight-year-old Basenji Chihuahua mix — like an “Egyptian Prairie Dog,” we’re told. BD is a transplant from NYC and has been in Seattle for about 5 years. “Buddy Dean is an amazing jumper,” his friend says.

Crybaby musician’s grant carves out space for artists on Capitol Hill

Since 1999, Leigh Stone has witnessed the transformation of Capitol Hill as owner of Crybaby Studios, a subterranean warren of rehearsal spaces below 11th Ave between Pike and Pine. She has had a front row seat — or, more accurately, a view from the orchestra pit — to the accelerating gentrification of the surrounding neighborhood. Now she is carving out space for working class artists with the Crybaby Musician’s Grant, a program that will award three months’ access to a private studio and recording equipment for musicians who could not otherwise afford it.

    Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney spent his life serving the community including some six decades of service at 19th and Madison. The pastor emeritus of Mount Zion Baptist Church died Saturday at the age of 91. McKinney left the pulpit in 1998 after 40 years leading Mount Zion and remained a steady presence for the congregation and the city's Black community.

    The Reef wins state approval for pot shop on Capitol Hill's E Olive Way
    The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board has approved the permit for Bremerton's The Reef retail marijuana shop to move its operations to Capitol Hill's E Olive Way. The decision was posted this week after the multi-month application review process. The Reef ownership has not responded to our multiple attempts to talk with them about their plans on Capitol Hill.

    Capitol Hill's Elysian Brewery is stepping up with a bigger party during the neighborhood's annual Pride festivities this summer before taking a brewing break for a major overhaul of its E Pike beer making facility. A June 23rd Pride Saturday beer garden will join the gardens around Pike/Pine include outside the Wildrose and The Cuff with a portion of proceeds benefitting Seattle Pride.

    Beginning in May, you can hike from Broadway to Mount Teneriffe... via Metro
    The hike to the summit of Mount Teneriffe takes around four or five hours, and, starting this May, a King County Metro bus ride from Capitol Hill Station. Starting May 19th, the Trailhead Direct program is expanding with routes connecting Broadway to the Mount Si and Teneriffe trails.

    Denise Juneau, an education and Democratic leader from Montana, a lesbian, and a member of the Mandan Hidatsa Tribes, has been selected as the next leader of the Seattle public school system Juneau's choice came Wednesday night as the Seattle Schools board voted for the 51-year-old to take over the post filled by interim superintendent Larry Nyland since the summer of 2014.
