  • St. Alphonsus School reviewed by a parent

The teachers and the community of the school are outstanding. Our kids are happy, confident young people and are now thriving both academically and socially. I definitely recommend you check it out.

  • St. Alphonsus School reviewed by a parent

The school is in decline due to extremely poor leadership on the part of the principal and an unwillingness to do anything on the part of the diocese. There are teachers there who care about the kids, but success starts at the top. The principal is more concerned with generating revenue than quality education - books are old and out dated, technology isn't meaningfully included in the curriculum, teaching methods are antiquated, policies of exclusion are promoted. To make matters worse, he appears to not have a filter, alternately insulting parents and kids then saying "but we love you." Trying to communicate with him as an adult is strange, awkward and more often than not an exercise in stomaching the inappropriate.

Our child has had such a rough experience with bullying at this school and the administration and teachers are totally unwilling to engage to address it. It might be ok for kids who have been together here from the beginning and grown up together, but we would strongly caution anyone from transferring in from another school. Unfortunately, it's just not a very welcoming environment for new families.

5 of the least expensive homes in Ballard
Ballard is no longer full of old bungalows and craftsmans. There's a mix that spans from less than a decade old to more than a century. Here are five of the least expensive homes listed. One measure of the hot market is the fact that none have been listed for more than a month.

Positive: Great teachers. Dedicated staff. We have been at the school for four years and couldn't be happier with the adults our child interacts with most often. We are concerned about pending retirements, and less qualified candidates coming into the school. Negative: Current Principal is emotionally immature. Poor leadership skills. Not a good role model for students. I have personally heard him yelling in his office. I have also heard him refer to new students as "my little paychecks" and make a cha-ching sound, like he was a cash register. His behavior is affecting school moral. In summary, great teachers, terrible Principal.

Our child graduated in June and we are now finding out how unprepared he is for HS. In order to catch up with the students at his new school, we are paying for a private tutor to bring him up to speed in math and science education.
