...big neighborhood story turned out to be the fight over the Denny’s restaurant at 15th and Market. Originally called Manning’s, it was a popular neighborhood cafe sporting a unique architectural style...

Our most memorable stories on My Ballard's 10th anniversary
A decade ago, we were new to the neighborhood and inspired by the West Seattle Blog and Capitol Hill Seattle Blog. So we decided to start a blog for Ballard, called ourselves the "Geeky Swedes" and published our first post on Dec. 11, 2007.

  • St. Alphonsus School reviewed by a parent

We have had a wonderful experience in the 10+ years we have had kids at St Al's. St Al's is full of fantastic teachers in an amazing supportive community. Our kids were very prepared for high school academically and socially. The single gender classrooms within the coed Middle School helped our kids to grown as students and socially. There are some schools that are said to "teach to the girls" because they sit still in class. This eliminates any situations like that since their academic classes are either all boys or all girls. The Leadership in the school and parish has had its ups and downs over the years. St Als used to specialize in support for dyslexia but when that Teacher retired. there were a few transition years where learning differences weren't well supported. The current Teacher who leads that group is beyond outstanding and her academic support includes dyslexia as well as many other learning styles. The parent community is strong and supportive and there are ample opportunities for working parents or work from home or stay at home parents to participate. You get out of it what you put into it, so where some people haven't felt the fit , it often could have been remedied with a little effort. We recommend St Al's to any and all.

Before Ballard was a hipster exclave made of ironically crunchy dive bars, it was a fishing village made of sincerely crunchy dive bars, a separate town from Seattle altogether. Settled in the 1850s, Ballard quickly became known for its fishing and timber jobs based out of Salmon Bay-as well the large number of Scandinavian immigrants who were lured to the area by these jobs.

Ballard business briefs: The Mailbox, Fit Massage, Fit36

Over in the new My Ballard Forum, Tailwind asks “Is Fit Massage out of business?” Windows are papered over at the corner of Leary and Vernon, and the website has disappeared. However, it appears the separate business, Fit Wellness Center, remains open in the same building.
