Connelly: A call to construction projects: Give US a break!

I was driving to work down Pine Street the other day. The Seattle Dept. of Transportation has already created confusion here: The center lane suddenly becomes a left turn lane at 5th & Pine, while part of the right lane is still marked: "Buses Only."

Or there was the downtown experience of heading east up Marion Street, intending to take 6th Avenue to Madison Street. However, construction was underway at 6th and Marion, and traffic was diverted south.

This article has 2 other Seattle locations (Show)

Another instance: With help from Seattle City Council member Sally Bagshaw -- yes, one people at City Hall do constituent work -- I once got an orange, left-pointed detour sign taken down at the intersection of 4th and Wall.

The great 23rd Avenue mess produced best evidence of blunderbuss planning. The reconstruction project closed the busy 23rd & Union intersection one Sunday. Nobody told westbound motorists headed up Union. They reached the intersection and were forced to turn around in a narrow space.

Connelly: A call to construction projects: Give US a break!
Published 12:58 pm, Thursday, June 14, 2018 Over the years I have watched for, appreciated and heeded highway construction zone signs carrying the message: "Give 'em a brake." The navigation of Seattle construction zones raises the need for an equally important admonition: "Give US a break."
