11 years after a rape in Seattle, DNA leads to charges against Illinois man

On March 14, 2007, the then-44-year-old woman was walking near Second Avenue and Pike Street when she was pulled into the back seat of a white Cadillac. The driver dropped the woman and her assailant off in a wooded area near a homeless encampment, where the woman was thrown to the ground and raped.

11 years after a rape in Seattle, DNA leads to charges against Illinois man
The victim's rape kit, which contains DNA evidence, was among thousands that sat untested for years in a statewide backlog. It was finally sent for forensic testing last year and the DNA matched that of an Illinois sex offender, prosecutors say.

$12 million a mile: Here’s how bike-lane costs shot sky high in Seattle

He brought up the death of Sher Kung, an attorney and new mother killed by a left-turning box-truck driver at Second and University Street in 2014.

She devised simpler designs for short bike lanes last fall on Pike and Pine streets downtown, for $350,000 each. Those rely on plastic posts and planter boxes, “something we’ve borrowed from Vancouver,” Sparrman said.

$12 million a mile: Here's how bike-lane costs shot sky high in Seattle
At present rates, the Seattle Department of Transportation says it might be able to afford only half the 50 miles of bike lanes promised in the Move Seattle levy approved by voters in 2015. Share story Instead of a ribbon-cutting, Seattle officials called for a "soft launch" this month for a protected bike lane on Seventh Avenue.

Open thread: What does your dream bike network look like?
This morning, as the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) handed out bagels to bike commuters, some had a bigger ask: Finish the "basic bike network." This morning at City Hall, a slate of advocates from Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, and others-supported by City Councilors Rob Johnson, Teresa Mosqueda, and Sally Bagshaw-advocated for a connected bike network throughout downtown.
