Sizeism: Why Small Homes Belong in Fremont and Seattle-wide

About 3959 Fremont Ave

New parklet opens at 25th and Union this Sunday

Sizeism: Why Small Homes Belong in Fremont and Seattle-wide " The Urbanist
The urbanist community spit-taked last week reading a glib op-ed in The Seattle Times that railed against a project planned for Fremont which includes small efficiency homes. The author (who lives in an ample Fremont townhome likely priced around $800,000) said living in a small efficiency is akin to "steerage" in a ship.

Neighbors fight back against high-density Fremont development

The subject of the outcry is a proposal (.pdf) for a 3-story apartment building at 3959 Fremont Ave. N. with 29 units — 26 of those “small efficiency dwelling units” — in the space of two lots. It’s located on the northern edge of the Fremont Urban Village, which allows higher-density zoning.

Neighbors fight back against high-density Fremont development
A proposal to build a high-density apartment building across from B.F. Day Elementary School in Fremont has sparked a particularly loud outcry from neighbors. How loud? A petition with 155 signatures. 115 public comment letters. And an editorial with the headline, "Even as a newbie, I know tiny apartments don't belong in Fremont," that was linked on the home page of the Seattle Times.

Even as a newbie, I know tiny apartments don’t belong in Fremont

...them. But Project 3026875, a “small efficiency-unit” complex proposed by developer Vann Lanz at 3959 Fremont Ave. N., is neither the solution Fremont needs right now nor the one it deserves...

Even as a newbie, I know tiny apartments don't belong in Fremont
Due to corporate immigrants like me, it's no secret that housing is tight in Seattle. But we must put our collective foot down to insist on non-steerage accommodations for our fellow man. Share story To my great shame, I confess that my husband and I are what's wrong with Seattle.
