CHS Pics | Punk Rock Flea Market makes Central District Red Apple temporary home

Given the coming changes at 23rd and Jackson, the shuttered Red Apple in the shopping center acquired for Vulcan redevelopment can be a symbol of pretty much anything you want — gentrification, displacement, change. But last week, it was simply a giant shuttered space full of old grocery infrastructure that needed to be cleared out. The Punk Rock Flea Market was in full scramble mode to find its 2017 one-weekend home after previous plans fell through. So those shelves — and much much more — needed to come out.

As SPD’s report on Lyles fatal shooting released, I-940 make last push for signatures

As SPD's report on Lyles fatal shooting released, I-940 make last push for signatures
Organizers pushing for Initiative 940 to provide law enforcement officers more training on de-escalating lethal situations while eliminating Washington's so-called "malice standard" for prosecuting police killings say they want to be doubly sure they have enough signatures to quality for the ballot.

Next for E Olive Way restaurant space: International Montessori Academy

One of the more rapidly blighted empty spaces on Capitol Hill will spring back to life in 2018. The little ones who will put it to use every day will say more about Capitol Hill Station and the neighborhood’s proximity to downtown than this stretch of Capitol Hill’s nightlife growth or a new highly anticipated industry coming to the street.

Clock starts ticking for Seattle task force to find revenue for homelessness services

While the Seattle City Council dramatically voted down a proposed tax on big businesses to fund homelessness services (otherwise known as the employee head tax) during last month’s contentious budget city budget negotiations, they also passed a resolution establishing a task force to study the same tax they had just voted down as well as other potential ways to pay for homelessness services.

Pikes/Pines | December Dormancy: How Hill’s trees persist in winter

In the Northern Hemisphere, people spend much of winter considering freezing weather, both out of practicality and for the fun of snow. In the Pacific Northwest, lowland rain may be more common than frost, but that doesn’t mean we never get freezing weather. Plants know this, otherwise our native forests would likely look very different. Have you ever considered how trees cope with frozen conditions?

Capitol Hill Community Post | How to help Lowell Elementary

From Colleen Kimsey

Capitol Hill Community Post | How to help Lowell Elementary
You'd imagine that now, as the dust from the brouhaha surrounding the McCleary Decision around how education is funded in Washington State has begun settling, there would be a baseline of adequate funding for our schools.

To beat Republican tax changes, $54M Seattle Asian Art Museum upgrade deal can move forward

In a rush against time and the looming Republican evisceration of federal tax credits, the City of Seattle will enter into a 55-year lease for the continued operation of the Seattle Asian Art Museum and an agreement that paves the way for a needed $54 million upgrade of the 84-year-old building its calls home in Volunteer Park. The agreement will come even as the City Council parks committee shepherding the agreement is asking for more from the deal.

Test riding Seattle’s bike shares: A guide

In one case, I opened the Spin app and it showed two bikes available on Eighth Avenue just north of Stewart. Neither was there. Across the street on Stewart, a Spin bike (not shown in the app) was parked. When I tried to unlock it, the app crashed, and then my phone died.

...rush hour one day, as legions of grumpy bus riders waited to go home at Third Avenue and Pike, I hopped on an ofo bike and was home 15 minutes later as I rode...

As Brewlab celebrates winter, Redhook now focused fully on Capitol Hill

Redhook is now all in on Capitol Hill — with some help from Portland. The Pacific Northwest beer brand owned and operated by global brew force Craft Beer Alliance will soon have only one Seattle-area brewing operation under its banner — right here on E Pike — after agreeing to sell its Woodinville brewery site for $24.5 million.

R&M Dessert Bar brings sweet touch to a night out on E Pike

Optimizing the fine dining experience has meant *some* restaurants — nobody on Capitol Hill, of course — would rather you and your lovely date move along to open up a table and, gasp, not have dessert. That’s ok when places like R&M Dessert Bar are coming along.

Final election data maps: Capitol Hill leaned ‘anti-establishment,’ but rallied for Mosqueda

More blue = More Mosqueda

Final election data maps: Capitol Hill leaned 'anti-establishment,' but rallied for Mosqueda
It's no surprise that Capitol Hill leans hard to left in local elections. In 2015, socialist City Council member Kshama Sawant decisively won reelection against Urban League CEO Pamela Banks with roughly a ten point margin, and lefty Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders had a solid base of support on Capitol Hill during the 2016 Democratic presidential primary.

  • Spruce St. School reviewed by a parent

Both my kids attended SSS and as a result were both well prepared for middle school. The school provided the small classes and individual attention that they needed. They loved going to school and there were regular things each year they looked forward to (electives, Arts Week, the plays, Elder's Tea, etc). It really was the perfect start for their social-emotional learning journey. Academically it could have been more challenging but I feel the elementary school years are really about developing the foundation of confidence, compassion, and kindness.

Destined for demolition, ‘depressing’ Broadway Bonney-Watson won’t get landmark protections

There is no shade thrown more darkly than the criticisms leveled at an old building brought up for landmarks review by a developer who wants dearly to demolish it. Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board Wednesday night unanimously rejected the nomination of Broadway’s 1961-built Bonney-Watson Funeral Home calling the modern-style building underwhelming, boxy, and, well, depressing.
