The Central Area Land Use Review Committee hosted a meeting last week for developers and neighbors to discuss the ongoing Midtown Center project at 23rd and Union with the community. And while the meeting was ostensibly focused on the design of the project, neighbors and advocates at the meeting reminded developers of the block's importance in the African American community's past - and future - in Seattle.

Connelly: A call to construction projects: Give US a break!

The great 23rd Avenue mess produced best evidence of blunderbuss planning. The reconstruction project closed the busy 23rd & Union intersection one Sunday. Nobody told westbound motorists headed up Union. They reached the intersection and were forced to turn around in a narrow space.

I was driving to work down Pine Street the other day. The Seattle Dept. of Transportation has already created confusion here: The center lane suddenly becomes a left turn lane at 5th & Pine, while part of the right lane is still marked: "Buses Only."

Or there was the downtown experience of heading east up Marion Street, intending to take 6th Avenue to Madison Street. However, construction was underway at 6th and Marion, and traffic was diverted south.

Another instance: With help from Seattle City Council member Sally Bagshaw -- yes, one people at City Hall do constituent work -- I once got an orange, left-pointed detour sign taken down at the intersection of 4th and Wall.

Published 12:58 pm, Thursday, June 14, 2018 Over the years I have watched for, appreciated and heeded highway construction zone signs carrying the message: "Give 'em a brake." The navigation of Seattle construction zones raises the need for an equally important admonition: "Give US a break."

Oh, Seattle summer. You fickle, fickle beast. Like Katy Perry once whined, "You're hot then you're cold..." She wasn't referring to your temperamental temperatures, yet, it relates all too well. No matter! We're out here waiting in lines that snake through scoop shops like our ice cream-loving lives depend on it.

A thread of Catfish Corner's Southern legacy continues on at this storied Central District corner via fried chicken atop old-fashioned thin waffles, the kind with tiny squares. Chef Patrick Dours coaxes heroic amounts of personality from boneless, skinless chicken breasts; his tricks include a combo buttermilk-pickle juice brine and an elaborate dredge-and-chill process to keep the crust from falling off the minute it encounters your knife.
